Design systems that survive their second year

Design systems that survive their second year

Design By Ali

Every design system starts with a beautiful component library. The hard part is month thirteen, when a new team needs a pattern the system does not have and nobody remembers who owns it.

Start with the product, not the library

We never design a component in the abstract. Every button, card and form field in a new system comes from a real screen that customers use. If a component is not used in at least two places, it stays a local pattern.

Name an owner and a budget

A design system is a product with users, so it needs an owner, a backlog and time in every sprint. We recommend ten per cent of design and engineering capacity, even after launch.

Document decisions, not just components

  • Why the primary button exists and when not to use it
  • Which colour pairs meet contrast requirements
  • How motion should behave for people who prefer less of it

Make contribution easy

Teams adopt systems they can change. A simple proposal template and a fortnightly review keep the system growing with the product instead of falling behind it.

Measure adoption, not size

A library with 300 components that nobody uses is a museum. We track how many screens use system components, how often teams detach or override them and how long a new pattern takes to go from proposal to production. Those three numbers tell you whether the system is healthy long before anyone complains.

Version it like software

Changes ship with release notes, a version number and a migration guide. Breaking changes are rare, announced a sprint ahead and paired with a code change that updates existing screens automatically where possible. Teams trust a system that never surprises them.

Systems that last are boring in the best way: predictable, well documented and owned by someone.
